Don’t the smell and taste of fresh herbs make a refreshing cocktail even more invigorating? As if that weren’t already an excuse to feature them in your drinks, it’s the Kentucky Derby weekend! Time to break out the crazy hats and mint juleps! I experimented with Thai basil and added some lemongrass syrup for my usual Asian flair. Try adding a twist to your traditional mint juleps by experimenting with different herbs; boozy trial and error is always a good time in the kitchen.

Thai Basil Juelp

Ingredients
  

For the syrup

  • 2 lemongrass stalks
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup sugar

For the cocktail

  • 2 oz Kentucky bourbon
  • 5 large Thai basil leaves
  • 2 tbsp lemongrass syrup
  • 1 tbsp cold water
  • crushed ice
  • additional Thai basil for garnish

Instructions
 

  • For the syrup, chop lemongrass into small 1 inch pieces. In a small pot, bring water, sugar, and chopped lemongrass to a boil and let simmer for about 20 minutes until mixture becomes a thick syrup.
  • In a highball glass, muddle Thai basil leaves in cold water and lemongrass syrup. Stir in bourbon.
  • Add crushed ice and garnish with Thai basil sprigs.
